All-State Band

LMEA sponsors two All-State bands – All-State Symphonic Band, which includes approximately 60 students, and All-State Concert Band, which includes approximately 80 students. Band students are selected as a result of district (1st round) and state (2nd round) auditions.

2023 ALL-STATE SYMPHONIC BAND CLINICIAN: Richard Saucedo, Retired Director of Bands and Performing Arts Department Chairman, Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana

Richard L. Saucedo retired in 2013 as Director of Bands and Performing Arts Department Chairman at the William H. Duke Center for the Performing Arts at Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana. During his 31-year tenure, Carmel bands received numerous state, regional and national honors in the areas of concert band, jazz band and marching band. Under his direction, Carmel’s Wind Symphony I performed at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival three times (1992, 1999, and 2004) and was named the Indiana State Champion Concert Band most recently in 2013. The group also performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago during December of 2005. The Carmel Marching Greyhounds finished in the top ten at the Bands of America Grand National Championship for 17 years under Saucedo and were named BOA National Champions in the fall of 2005. Carmel became one of the few schools to win a BOA National Championship and perform at the Midwest Clinic in the same year in 2005. The Marching Band was the Indiana Class A State Champion four times. The Indiana Bandmasters Association named Mr. Saucedo Indiana’s “Bandmaster of the Year” for 1998-99 and he was named the “Outstanding Music Educator” in the state of Indiana for 2010 by the Indiana Music Educators Association. Mr. Saucedo’s accomplishments have been highlighted in articles by HALFTIME and SCHOOL BAND AND ORCHESTRA Magazines. He was inducted into the Music for All “Hall of Fame” in 2015 and recently was inducted into the Drum Corps International “Hall of Fame” (2022).

2023 ALL-STATE CONCERT BAND CLINICIAN:
Sharon Laird, Assistant Director of Athletic Bands at UW-Eau Claire

Sharon S. Laird is currently enjoying semi-retirement while working as a sales representative for Southern Performances, a band uniform and accessory company. After 30+ years in public education, Mrs. Laird accepted the position as Assistant Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. While at Eau Claire Mrs. Laird assisted with the 475 member Blugold Marching Band, and was assistant conductor of the University Band. Prior to her appointment at UWEC, Mrs. Laird served as Director of Bands at Oak Grove High School, West Jones, Taylorsville, Magee, and Italy, TX.

During Mrs. Lairds’ time at Oak Grove, the bands performed at numerous local and regional conferences and events. The Wind Ensemble was the featured high school performing ensemble at the 2014 Mississippi Bandmaster’s Association State Band Clinic and has performed as a featured ensemble at The William Carey Honor Band, The University of Southern Mississippi All South Honor Band, The University of Alabama Honor Band Festival, and the Music for All Concert Invitational at The University of Louisiana, Lafayette. The Oak Grove Bands consistently received superior ratings in all categories at state and regional festivals, and have been awarded the MHSAA Sweepstakes Award every year since its’ inception. The Warrior Marching Band was the 2016 6A Silver Medalist and the 2017 6A Gold Medalist Mississippi Marching Band Champion.

INFORMATION ABOUT DISTRICT LEVEL (1st ROUND) AUDITIONS

Each of the nine LMEA Districts will hold a district level 1st round qualifying audition to determine the students who will qualify for the 2nd round state level audition. Students must audition in their school’s LMEA district for the 1st round audition.

Date, time, fees, and location for the 1st round audition are set by the District Director for his/her district. (Be aware of 2nd round deadlines before setting this date.)

  • 1st Round – District directors will require students to submit either this form or their specific district’s form for 1st round auditions.
  • 2nd Round – No student’s audition recording will be accepted for 2nd Round adjudication without the receipt of this form by the District’s recording date. Follow your District Director’s instructions for submitting the LMEA Student Information Release Form.

AUDITION CUTS (ETUDES AND PREPARED SELECTIONS) FOR 2023 – These are to be used in all 2nd Round auditions and may also be used in 1st Round auditions.  The cut sheet includes percussion requirements. If you have any questions, check with your District Director. (Updated 5/10/23)

INFORMATION ABOUT STATE LEVEL (2nd ROUND) AUDITIONS

The format of the Second Round audition is a Live Monitored Audition which will be submitted as an mp3 file. 

  • District directors will verify that teachers of all students participating in these auditions are current members of LMEA.
  • All “2nd round” auditions will be audio recorded by the District Director or his/her designee(s) and submitted as an mp3 file to the Division Chair for adjudication.
  • The date, time, and location will be set by the district, but must adhere to the current year’s state deadlines.

DEADLINES for 2023-24:

  • District Deadlines – District Directors will provide procedural information and set the deadline for receiving checks and student information from schools in their district. This deadline may be before the state deadline.
  • Saturday, September 30, 2023 – Deadline for completion of all 2nd round auditions and the receipt of all student registrations and audition fees by the district director or his/her designee.
  • Monday, October 2, 2023 (by 11:59 pm) – Deadline for uploading all 2nd round audition files (mp3) and student information via Google form. Links will be sent to District Directors by the State Audition Coordinator. District Directors must also confirm the receipt of all Release of Student Information forms by this date.
  • Wednesday, October 4, 2023 – Postmark deadline for District Directors to send a check (payable to LMEA) to the State Audition Chair. Send a separate check for each division’s auditions.
  • Monday, October 9, 2023 (by 11:59 pm) – Results for the All-State Bands and Orchestra Winds will be posted online. Check ALL lists. Registration forms for students selected to an ensemble will opened once rosters are posted.
  • Tuesday, October 10, 2023 (9:00 am) – Hotel block will open for students and teachers at 9:00 am. No reservations in the Conference and All-State block can be accepted prior to this time. Check the All-State Hotel Registration page for the latest information, prices, and contact information.
  • Monday, October 23, 2023 (by 11:59pm) – All-State registration for students selected to an ensemble must be completed. Academic Award forms (if eligible) are also due.
