Beginning in 2021, LMEA added an All-State Guitar Ensemble. The rehearsals and performance are the weekend before Thanksgiving. Exact dates and times will be available closer to the event.

Guitar students are selected as a result of a single state-wide audition. This audition will be recorded in each district by the District Director or designated guitar chair and submitted to the All-State Guitar Chair for adjudication.

2023 ALL-STATE GUITAR ENSEMBLE SCHEDULE

2023 All-State Guitar Director: Dr. Janet Grohovac, performer and professor

All-State Guitar Conductor 2023Canadian-American classical guitarist, Dr. Janet Grohovac, is a passionate performer and sought after instructor based in Austin, Texas. Janet holds Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria, British Columbia. As a dynamic concert artist, recent performances include appearances at the Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Taxco, Mexico with the Ibison Guitar Duo, and solo concerts for Austin Classical Guitar Society’s Salon and Cactus series, the Central Valley’s Guitarraganza festival in California, and Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Summer Guitar Academy in Canada. Dr. Grohovac has accumulated many top prize awards in competitions including: 1st place as a soloist in Southern Guitar Competition and Northwest Guitar Competition, and was a finalist in the international guitar competitions at Montreal, Lone Star Guitar Festival, Tennessee, and Dallas. 

Janet is a member of the Ibison Guitar Duo, where she and Dr. Chad Ibison perform throughout the US and abroad. Recent concerts include their 2022 Southeast tour in Nashville, TN, Columbus, GA and Troy, AL. They have also performed at St. Barnabas’ concert series in Canada, Ticino Musica’s concerts in Lugano, Switzerland, Houston’s Classical Guitar Festival and Competition, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee concert series, Austin Classical Guitar’s Cactus Café series, and Austin’s radio stations KMFA and KVRX. 

Janet is also a member of the Austin Guitar Quartet. In 2019, the quartet performed and recorded Nico Muhly’s “How Little You Are” with the Texas Guitar Quartet, and the Grammy Award Winning groups, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and Conspirare under the direction of Craig Hella Johnson. The 2020 album, “The Singing Guitar” on the Delos label, reached #15 on the Billboard traditional classical charts in its first week and was reviewed favorably by BBC 3 Radio. In 2022, the album was nominated for a Grammy.

In addition to performing, Janet is an avid professor and directs the guitar program at Concordia University. She also directed the guitar programs as professor at Huston-Tillotson University and Texas Lutheran University and is invited regularly to teach masterclasses and adjudicate competitions at universities and guitar festivals throughout North America. Janet has also served as a clinician for the Lullaby Project through Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections Program.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

There is a single live monitored audition for All-State Guitar Ensemble.  All auditions will be audio recorded by the District Director or his/her designee and submitted to the All-State Guitar Chair as an mp3 file.

District directors will verify that teachers of all students participating in these auditions are current members of LMEA.

DEADLINES for 2023:

  • Audition Date and Location – The date, time, and location will be set by the District Director.
  • District Deadlines – District Directors will provide procedural information and set the deadline for receiving checks and student information from schools in their district. This deadline may be before the state deadline.
  • Saturday, September 30, 2023 – All guitar auditions must be completed by this date. Deadline for the district director or his/her designee to receive all student registrations and audition fees.
  • Monday, October 2, 2023 (by 11:59 pm) – Deadline for the District Director or his/her designee to submit all audition files (mp3) and student information via Google form. All links will be sent to District Directors by the State Audition Chair. District Directors must also confirm that they have received all audition fees and Release of Student Information forms by this date.
  • Wednesday, October 4, 2023 – Postmark deadline for District Directors to send a check (payable to LMEA) to the State Audition Chair. Send a separate check for each division’s auditions.
  • Monday, October 9, 2023 (by 11:59 pm) – Results for the All-State Guitar Ensemble will be posted on this website. Registration forms for students selected to an ensemble will opened once rosters are posted.
  • Tuesday, October 10, 2023 (9:00 am) – Hotel block will open for students and teachers at 9:00 am. No reservations in the Conference and All-State block can be accepted prior to this time. Check the All-State Hotel Registration page for the latest information, prices, and contact information.
  • Monday, October 23, 2023 (by 11:59pm) – All-State registration for students selected to an ensemble must be completed. Academic Award forms (if eligible) are also due.
